Well, this Olympic year is over harder and faster than I recall ever before.
From my chair, I watched with greater interest and excitement.
With the Paralympic Games, it was beamed to us all this past summer and winter, like it or not.
Being in a wheelchair, it’s hard to imagine oneself running a marathon or going down a mogul slope flipping for two Iron Crosses.
However, wheelchair curling seemed to offer some hope.
No sweeping with the yelling we associate with curling, it seems a peaceful way to build sport skills on ice.
We are fortunate to have a curling rink in Squamish, and at least one member of the executive has encouraged me to try.
I did try wheelchair rugby and was motion sick for a few days with all the twisting and spinning.
Swimming seemed to generate the same effect in my new MS self.
The prospect of peacefully pushing a rock with a stick down the ice is encouraging.
I hope other wheelchair people out there feel the same urge to compete.
Our town is very supportive, and we have HandyDART to get us to the rink.
Please contact me if you feel the urge to compete at this modest sport: [email protected].
