Letter: Ongoing bus strike hits hard in Squamish

Maybe we need to consider the consequences that not having public transit will have down the road for our community.

What do you think of the bus strike? Let us know: [email protected].

The majority of Â鶹Éç¹ú²údoesn't seem to be inconvenienced by this, but not having a local transit system has greatly impacted my life. I go downtown for medical appointments almost every day, and I am unable to drive or consistently ride a bike because I have an acquired brain injury.

There must be a resolution to this. If the employer can't afford to pay the workers a decent wage, why can't the bus tariff be raised to cover some of this? The Vancouver bus tariff is $2 per ride with the loadable Compass Card and here we pay $39/month for an unlimited pass. To me, paying a bit more per month for an increased bus tariff is preferable to paying over $600/month in taxi fares. As we don't have the option of Uber here either, taxis are limited with lengthy wait times.

I think of how many lower-income workers will have fewer transportation options, and businesses that are already experiencing worker shortages will suffer from no public transit. Our downtown parking situation is already strained, and the public transit surely helps with our downtown congestion. Public transit also lowers road accidents as there are fewer vehicles on the road. Not to mention we are supposed to be reducing our carbon emissions, not going backwards and relying more on single-occupant vehicles.

Maybe we need to consider the consequences that not having public transit will have down the road for our community.
