I was surprised and disappointed to read [in the editorial, “We need a paradigm shift on parking, Squamish” published on March 18] about the outcry regarding the new seating area downtown by .
Common spaces, places where people can congregate for free to relax or connect with others and talk trivia or about things that really matter, are critical to the wellness of a town. I had thought that a town with such a young demographic, with theoretically a commitment to the environment, fitness, and building community relationships, would be delighted to have an additional tiny commons spot. Not so, apparently.
The spot is a direct challenge to the commodification of all lands; it’s a political act of resisting privatization of all space. Thank you to those who built it and to those who offered the space. Well done. I’m happy to walk a block or two.
