Thanks to a neighbour pointing out the running water on the road one night,  I checked the road the following day and saw that an area outside our house was still wet, with puddles, while the tarmac 46 metres (50 yards) in either direction was dry.

I phoned the Works Yard soon after 8 a.m., and a couple of men were here within the hour with equipment to check the water main and determine that the main was intact and that the water bubbling to the surface was due to the high water table.  Before 9:30 a.m. I had received a phone call from the Works Department to give me their findings and assure me that they would check for freezing in the coming days.

I think that’s excellent service, fast, efficient and cheerfully carried out.  We are well served by our council and staff, and I am dismayed by the criticism they have received in recent attack ads.
