It鈥檚 hard for me to read an article titled 鈥淚t鈥檚 a total bummer鈥 that a bike race was cancelled
[Published in The Chief June 4] when Black and Indigenous people are dying.
Every ad in the last two editions of the paper feature white people. Every article [in the June 4 edition] but one about Francis Masculino鈥檚 lottery win (congrats!) was about white people, white ideals, beliefs, and values. The June 4 editorial 鈥Can we tone it down a notch, Squamish鈥 doesn鈥檛 consider the racist climate where tone policing is a way in which white people oppress people of colour. An article about white nurses in that same paper is written through the lens of white saviourism.
In this week鈥檚 June 11 paper, the anti-racism protest and article with Rachel Decoste made pages 19-20 of a 23-page paper (not including classifieds). The editorial 鈥Working to end racism鈥 says 鈥渟ome of us will need to address our so-called white fragility.鈥
All white people need to acknowledge and unlearn white fragility and it鈥檚 not so-called, it鈥檚 dangerous. I am a white, cis-gendered, heterosexual woman. Racism is white people鈥檚 problem to fix and perhaps one small and important place it could start is with our local media.
