A vital part of being a community media outlet is having people come to us with questions or tips.
This has always been the case. Reporters aren’t omniscient; we depend on residents to email, call or drop by with what they know, or as is often the case these days, with a rumour they want to be confirmed or debunked.
We recently had a good example of this, someone came to us asking about OB/GYNs (obstetricians and gynecologists) in town.
The person heard we had none and was concerned.
We asked Vancouver Health Authority (VCH) and a spokesperson told us that there were two OB/GYNs working in Squamish, but they were no longer available after Feb. 1.
If you are expecting, there is no need to panic, however.
“There is an active group of local physicians to support deliveries at 麻豆社国产General Hospital as well as surgical support in the event of a C-section at the hospital,” the VCH spokesperson added.
In the event of any service disruptions, when existing staff are not available, the spokesperson said VCH works with OB/GYNs and doctors with an extended scope in general surgery from other places and “makes every effort to fill any potential gaps in coverage.”
If that coverage is not available, then VCH works with expectant mothers so care is provided at alternate hospital sites.
The 麻豆社国产Hospital has a good and long-standing relationship with Lions Gate Hospital, for example.
VCH is actively recruiting to replace the OB/GYNs
“VCH is committed to maintaining this service in 麻豆社国产for the Sea to Sky Corridor,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
That is good news, given our population tops 29,000 and 340 babies were born in 麻豆社国产in 2024.
All of this we looked into and found out because folks reached out to us.
