MONTREAL — Provincial police say two people in their 60s are dead after a violent collision between a transport truck and a vehicle on Friday night in central Quebec.

The crash took place on Highway 55 near St-Wenceslas, about 150 kilometres east of Montreal.

Police say a roughly 16-metre truck was trying to make a U-turn on the highway after stopping on the side of the road when a second vehicle crashed into the trailer.

Sgt. Hugues Beaulieu says two people in the vehicle — a man and a woman, both 68 — were killed on impact.

Beaulieu says the driver of the truck was arrested for dangerous driving causing death but was released on a promise to appear at a later date.

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the crash.
