Peter Wall, founder and controlling shareholder of Wall Financial Corp., has passed away, according to his company.

Peter Wall, one of Vancouver's premier hospitality and residential developers, has passed away in his late 80s.

Wall Financial Corp. announced on Wednesday the passing of its founder, whom it called “a trailblazing entrepreneur, philanthropist and city-builder” whose “influence on Vancouver's skyline, cultural landscape and intellectual community will be felt for generations.”

The company did not disclose Wall’s age, date of passing or cause of death, respecting the wishes and privacy of his family.

Wall arrived in Canada as a young Ukrainian immigrant of Mennonite heritage after the Second World War, and went on to become one of the most influential figures in Vancouver real estate.

Wall co-founded Wall & Redekop Corporation Ltd. in 1969, which later evolved into Wall Financial Corp. The company has been behind a wide range of real estate projects in the city, ranging from heritage restorations to high-density urban living.

One of Wall’s most notable projects is Wall Centre Vancouver, which consists of two towers containing a Sheraton hotel, luxury residences and event facilities. The project was completed in 1994 (the 35-storey south tower) and 2001 (the 48-storey One Wall Centre/north tower).

Prior to March 2, Peter Wall controlled the company through his ownership and control of 54 per cent of the outstanding common shares. Under his estate arrangements, all of these common shares will pass to the Peter Wall Legacy Trust, with a governance structure of three trustees.

Wednesday’s announcement also noted Wall’s passion for tourism, arts and culture, environmental sustainability and horse racing.

“His impact extended beyond the skyline; he enriched the soul of Vancouver,” said the company’s statement.
