NEW-WES-VALLEY, N.L. — There was a powerful word being repeated in the joyful Newfoundland community of New-Wes-Valley on Sunday: "Miracle.

The number of fires in B.C. soared past 300 on Friday afternoon, most caused by recent lightning storms, then fuelled by hot, dry weather and winds.

More lightning is forecast through the Central and Southern Interior late Friday afternoon and into the evening.

The Shetland Creek wildfire scorched much of the area on Wednesday night, and now officials are getting their first good look at the damage.
